What is a Covid-19 PCR-test?

Updated: May 3, 2022

Many people wonder what a PCR test is, before the covid-19 pandemic no one had heard that word. Today, most people associate a PCR test with a test for whether they have corona or not. This is because it is a little more complicated. In this article, we at Reseintyg365 want to inform interested people and arouse curiosity about scientific methods.

The definition on Wikipedia is Polymerase Chain Reaction, which actually means that it is a molecular biological and biochemical method used to amplify a few DNA Sequences based on viral RNA mass. This method was invented in 1983 by the American biochemist Kary Mullis and has since been used in medical laboratories, among other things, for the purpose of biochemical research and criminology.

PCR tests that we at Reseintyg365 perform are of the type RT-PCR, which means PCR with reverse transcription, here you create DNA from RNA. The amount of mRNA is measured and thus it can be seen whether a viral covid infection is present in the patient at the time of sampling or not. RT-PCR is also called real-time PCR or qPCR but this is considered scientifically incorrect, as it means something else in scientific terms.

PCR tests are not something that you use a quick kit for, therefore it must be analyzed in the laboratory. Our samples are sent daily to the lab which then analyzes the sample and then there are either negative, positive or unclear results. It is important that these machines are CE-marked and quality-assured, so we at the clinic have chosen a partner with accuracy and care. Our vision is to always give our customers the safest possible tests. Sometimes you can test positive long after you have recovered and no longer be contagious, but you must at least follow the Public Health Agency's and the infection control doctor's directive to be on the safe side that you do not aggravate the pandemic.

PCR tests are the safest method and are more accurate and specific than Antigen tests, these are therefore recommended. However, some countries accept travel certificates issued after performing the Antigen test, which is appreciated by travelers as this is cheaper, with us an EU-approved Antigen test costs SEK 395 while a PCR test costs SEK 850. We only test healthy and symptom-free travelers who are to travel for the safety of our staff, you can unfortunately still be positive even if you do not have symptoms.
